Milo is a Cavapoo who would resource guard everything – toys, food, treats… and especially random objects like socks or paper towel rolls. Milo is small, but has a full mouth of teeth, and would die before he would give up a treasured possession.
So we worked on “drop it,” and made a game of fetching a valued object and dropping it for his human (Ashley), who would reward him for the object. Then she would throw it so he could have it again.
This changed Milo’s whole stress level about guarding things, and made returning a prized commodity fun. Soon, he’ll be finding valued things around the house and happily taking them to one of his human friends.
